Ledima la Bobedi by Frans Thoka
Year: 2025
Created with high-end charcoal, a medium the artist had never used before. The Artist used the term "ledima"; a Sepedi concept his maternal grandmother taught him; which was referring the heavy clouds that block sunlight and darken the ground.
In the artists culture, "ledima" is often linked to heavy rainfall and strong winds which sometimes believed to signal the presence of "Mamogašwa" (mermaid), a mythical figure.
The drawing process seemed to mirror the external environment where each mark done on the paper appeared to contribute to the heavy clouds that were outside.
While Frans worked, the rain poured down, the wind blew and the streets flooded. For Ledima la Bobedi, a dry medium executed in charcoal and pastel chose to depict the moment before or after Ledima
